Field Trip

Jonathan Moore

At the farm we are always learning. In order to teach others we have to continually educate ourselves. So what do we do?

FIELD TRIP!!!

We got the opportunity last month to take a field trip to ECHO Farm in Fort Myers, Fl. This is a 50 acre farm fighting hunger from the ground up.

They teach small-scale, sustainable farming methods to families and communities all over the world. Because our visions are very similar, we took the chance to go learn from an organization that has been teaching and sending for over four decades.

While we were there we learned a great deal about different permaculture (permanent agriculture) methods, different ways to build with home grown materials like bamboo, and ways to purify water.

They showed us a method of purifying water with a single seed! They took a seed from the moringa tree, crushed it, and placed it in 16 oz of dirty water. We grow the moringa tree right here at Eden Gardens because it has incredible benefits. It provides food for our fish and chickens, it is a power packed source of nutrients, and it grows quickly and easily in our eco system.

We were blown away when we learned that the seed of this incredible tree, nicknamed the “Tree of Life”, could pull impurities from water and make it drinkable. The seed is crushed and left to sit for an hour or two. The impurities are pulled into the sediment and then pure water can be poured off leaving all the nasty stuff behind. How incredible. A single seed.

Reminds me of another seed. The seed of Abraham mentioned in Genesis 22:8. Jesus Christ, the seed sent to be pressed and crushed to cleanse and purify the world.
